1878-79.] EEVENUE AND FINANCE, IxXV
wliicli irrigation was actually carried on and on which
Government had spent large sums, amounted to £33,192,
or a total outlay up to date of £807,774. The net reve
nue from these works was £37,966, or a return of 4'90
per cent on the capital expended. The total capital
outlay on works of this class in Gujarat and the Deccan
amounted to £1,279,733, and they yielded a net revenue
during 1877-78 of £10,288. The progress of irrigation in
these districts has been of late years highly satisfactory,
and the extension of the use of the facilities provided by
Government since the experience of the seasons of 1876
and 1877 has been most marked.
The total amount realized from customs duties was
£623,737, or less than last year by £41,805. The
general depression of trade during part of the season and
the exemption from duty of some articles of merchandise
largely imported into this Presidency The name given to each of the three divisions of the territory of the East India Company, and later the British Raj, on the Indian subcontinent. , seem to have been
the causes to which the falling off in this branch of the
revenue is attributable. The realizations on this account
at the Port of Bombay amounted to £584,738, showing
a decrease of £37,764* which was most apparent in the
import duty on cotton piece-goods, provisions and raw
silk. Export duties increased by £6,944 in consequence
of larger transactions in rice. The percentage of duty on
the aggregate value of private trade in merchandise was
2'75 in the case of imports, and ’OSO in the case of ex
ports. The amount of drawback paid was nearly equal
to the average of the previous quinquennium, and was
chiefly paid on transactions in cotton, piece-goods and
sugar. The duty realized at Kurrachee and the smaller
ports in Sind amounted to £29,187, or £3,304 less than in
1877-78. The land customs yielded a revenue of £4,021.
The operations at the Mint were abnormally large in
1877-78, and this year the amount of coinage executed
showed a decrease of £6,142,258. The number of tenders
increased, whilst the amount diminished. Out of about
£4,880,000 received, 42* per cent came from Europe, 23-
per cent was presented in the form of native silver
