Ixiv BOMBAY ADMINISTRATION REPORT. [1878-79.
The returns published by the Mill-owners’ Association
in Bombay for the twelve months between April 187g
and March 1879, inclusive, show increased exports of
foreign piece-goods to the amount of 3,612 packages,
and decreased exports of foreign twist to the amount of
2,161 packages. The exports of native twist exceeded those
of the previous year by 7,646 packages, and native piece-
goods were exported to the amount of 10,128 packages
more than in 1877-78. By sea, the exports of piece-goods
of both foreign and native manufacture increased by 4,577
packages, and those of twist, chiefly native, by 11,807
packages. The exports of piece-goods by land increased
by 9,163 packages, and those of twist decreased by
6,316. The imports by sea of foreign piece-goods
amounted to 320,851,510 yards, and the exports of simi
lar articles to 133,309,078 yards. Those by rail are
entered only by weight. The imports of foreign twist
by sea were 6,853,431 lbs., and the exports by sea and
land exceeded this quantity by 2,713,637. The quantity
of foreign twist and piece-goods exported by land ex
ceeded that of native goods of similar description,
whilst the exports of native twist by sea exceeded those
of the foreign article. The total exports of native goods,
owing entirely to the transactions in twist and yarn by
sea, were 5'8 per cent higher than those of foreign
goods.

the Sind and Aden transactions apart from those at

The value of the entire trade of the Port of Bombay
during the year under review was £56,418,047, showing
a decrease of about 11J millions sterling as compared
with that of 1877-78. The private trade in merchandise
and treasure was valued at £55,076,198, or a falling off
amounting to £11,172,537, or 16* per cent. Excluding

Annual administration report of the Bombay Presidency The name given to each of the three divisions of the territory of the East India Company, and later the British Raj, on the Indian subcontinent. , providing a summary record of the main events and developments in each department of the Government of Bombay From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India. From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. during the financial year 1878-79. The report was printed at the Government Central Press, Bombay [Mumbai] in 1879.

The report is divided into three parts. Part I comprises a report ‘SUMMARY’ (ff 9-53). Part II (ff 54-265) comprises chapters I-IX. Part III comprises ‘Statistical Returns’ pertaining to chapters I-VII and IX (ff 266-435).
