seasons of the last few years. In Sangli, also, the new
rates, though high as compared with those that would
have been fixed on Government land of the same qua-
lity, produced but a slight difference in actual revenue.
Villages were prepared for settlement in one sub-division
of Kolhapur, but it was considered advisable to defer the
publication of the new rates until the whole of those
in the neighbourhood could be also settled. It may be
noticed here, as has been done in the departmental reports,
that in the case of Native States the revised rates have
almost invariably to be pitched at from 15' to 25- per
cent higher than those in adjacent British territory, in
order to avoid the loss of revenue that would otherwise
be incurred.
The total expenditure of the Bevenue Survey Depart
ment was £73,647, of which £68,015 was paid by Govern
ment, and the remainder by the Native States in which
parties were employed. The increased revenue resulting
from the settlements effected amounted to £18,212 in
British territory and £4,378 in Native States. The ad
ditional revenue to Government accruing from the revi
sion of rates effected in the six Collectorates re-settled
amounted to £121,190 during the year under review, or
cumulatively, since the first revision was undertaken, to
£595,097, the total cost of these operations having been
£184,185.

undertaken under the provisions of the local Act of 1868.
In four the operations have been completed, and in
four others the actual measurements and plans have
been finished, and the work remaining consists of the
inquiry into titles and the distribution of deeds to
those whose titles have been settled. The law with
regard to this settlement having been found defective, it
was amended in the Land Bevenue Code, which was pass
ed during the period under review. The work of settle
ment has been completed in Broach and in the towns
of Surat, Bulsdr and Binder in the Surat District.
