APPENDIX 33T
[Ny. No. 26533)
Telegram P., No. 33295-Cipher, dated 28rd April 1917.
(Despatched 10-5 p.m , received 11-45 a.m., 24th April 1917.)
From—The Chief of the Imperial General Staff, London,
To—The General Officer Commanding, Force “ D,” Baghdad.
(Kepeated to India.)
Wavell wires -.—Begins. I returned to-day from Erzinjan and in company
with Colonel Marsh, I interviewed General Tomilof on the subject of operations
of 7th Corps. He said that serious operations would certainly not commence
for another month on account of the necessity of improving the supply ques
tion, and that for the same reason the capture of Mosul was probably out of
the question, though, if Turks advanced south in force, Mosul could be threat
ened from Rowanduz which would be occupied.
General Bolkhovitinof was also interviewed by us, and he said he was
satisfied that supply of any large force was quite impossible on the line
Hamadan-Kirmanshah-Khanikin, as he had been reviewing question of supply in
Persia. He made the suggestion that main force 1st Caucasus Cavalry Corps
would be transferred to the Hamadan-Campne-Suleimaniyah line, the last named
place being occupied in force; and said that beyond this point it would be
impossible to guarantee supply. With regard to the 7th Corps, he said
that supply was not so difficult, but that before a serious advance to
Rowanduz can be attempted it would be necessary to push on the horse
tramway which is being built from Haidarabad towards Rowanduz, and also
that an advance on Mosul was totally out of the question from the point
of view of supply. The effect of above is, in fact, that since the changes in
Staff the Russians have made a complete volteface, and the proposed advance
in force on Mosul has been abandoned by them ; also they will content them
selves with occupying and holding general line of Rowanduz-Suleimaniyah,
Kizil Robat. It was stated by General Bolkhovitir.of that from this line m
co-operating with Force “X)” in approximately Tekrit-Samarra area a Turkish
attempt on Baghdad or to re-occupy Persia can be defeated. Ends.
In view of the above ycur mission is now as defined in my 80195
