APPENDIX VI.
Dated Kut, the 5th October 1918.
From— Lieut.-Col. A. L. Barrett, Commanding 49th Bengal Infantry,
To—The President, Board of Officers on 49th Bengal Infantry.
I have the honour to report, for the information of the Board, that, a 1 ? a
result of the route march that took place yesterday, I had to cut down the
number of men on Regimental guards and Bridge guards, from 58 to 33
I. 0. R. The rest of the men were so fatigued by the route march that it was
impossible to send them on guard. This seems at first-sight rather a wild
statement, hut the Board were present during yesterday’s march, and saw the
state to which the great majority of the men completed the exercise, and will
probably be able to understand. *
APPENDIX VII.
Dated Kut, the 7th October 1918.
p rom —Lteut.-Col. A. L. Barrett, Commanding 49th Bengal Infantry,
To—The President, Board of Officers on 49th Bengal Infantry.
I have the honour to request that, if possible, the Board will include
among any men of the 49th Infantry whom they may recommend for return to
India as unlikely for physical or other reasons to make efficient soldiers, the
names of the following two Non-Commissioned Officers :—
No. 147, Temporary Company Havildar Custodian; police sergeant; jail or prison guard. Major J. N. Sircar.
No. 293, Temporary Haviidar A. Sanyal.
There is, as far as I know r , nothing against these men on the score of health,
nor on account of their proficiency as Non-Commissioned Officers : I have,
however, every reason to believe that they were concerned in fomenting the
feeling of unrest that culminated lately in the murder of one Indian Officer and
the attempted murder of two others, and I am satisfied that their retention in
the regiment is against the interests of the Service. I am unable to provide
any proof in support of my statement, and must ask for it to be taken on trust
