APPENDIX 399.
DIARY No. 9S672.
Letter No. R.-l—8125, dated 6 th Noveaiber 1918.
(Received in War Section, 22 nd November 1918.)
From—The General Officer Commanding, Mesopotamian Expeditionary Force,
To—The Chief of the General Staff, Simla.
I have tile honour to acknowledge receipt of yonr L tW No. 2982 3
(Q. M. G.-1D), dated the llth-12tk October 1918 (Dy. No. 82871), and to
submit the following for the information of the Commander-in-Chief : —
t (1) It is fully realised that the shortage in my demands for cavalry horses
during the present shipping season—caused by the shipment from India of 1,500
Cavalry horses to Egypt—will not be made good.
(2) The suggestion that Cavalry horses should be reserved for use by
regiments in contact, or likely to be in contact, with the enemy is receiving
careful consideration and the Commander-in-Chief may rest assured that
Cavalry horses are only used to supply those units for which they are essential,
(3) The use of Government horses for other than Military purposes has
always received the strictest scrutiny.
(4) hinally it has been realised for a considerable period that the time
has passed when the ideal in remounts can be expected much less insisted on.
The greatest care is taken to ensure that animals of all categories are
issued in accordance with their correct classification and in no case is this more
strictly carried out than with the Cavalry horse.
Every effort will continue to he made to maintain the horsemaster ship
of the force under my command at a high level.
The loss and wastage in Cavalry horses, consequent on recent operations
is bound to be heavy, but the Armistice with Turkey will obviate the necessity
of immediate replacement.
