Your X.-5270, February 4th (Dy. No. 9170) and our 75144 (74414?) (Dy.
No. 6738).
No. 1 N. W. Persia—It is considered that* Sir P. Cox and also Persian
♦Change i letter. Government should be strengthened by
' retention of troops on Hamadan road
until the result of the Peace Conference is known. Also there should be no
reduction of troops at present in N. W. Persia. Instructions contained in War
Office JNo. 71418, November 23rd (Dy. No. 94744) should still be followed. It
is assumed that force for N. W. Persia, given in your telegram of February
18th No. X.-5428 (Dy. No. 13427) does not constitute a material reduction.
Please confirm and also report if you estimate that this force is sufficient to
carry out above policy.
No. 2 N. W. Persian Oil Fields. —See telegram from Civil Commissioner,
Baghdad, No. 537, dated January 15th (Dy. No. 4411). Before definite pro
nouncement is made, the further report mentioned in above telegram is awaited.
In the meantime approve of proposals to withdraw troops from vicinity of
Oil Fields when improvements to communication are complete. (See W. O.
ft change. telegram dated January 24th No. 74444,
(Dy. No. £738),andsufficientf troops should
be retained in Karun Valley in order to give effect to policy outlined in Com
missioner’s telegram 537 (Dy. No. 4411) mentioned above.
Under the above circumstances please wire the strength of the force you
propose to retain on the Karun.
