It is proposed to raise free porter corps to meet your demand, as this can
be raised more expeditiously.
It is expected that at end of this month half corps will sail, and as quickly
as possible, the balance will sail.

It is stated by two Indian Sappers who were captured by Turks at Rut-el-
Amarah and employed since July 1916 on Railway work Ras-el-Ain Nisibin
area, and escaped trom Helif 20 miles West Nisibin on 21st September last,
that broad gauge rail head was two miles east of Helif on that date and work
has been held up since September 14th, 1917, for want of rails, sleepers, nuts,
fish-plates. Work was to recommence end of September when materials were
expected. One informant saw embankment complete to Nisibin August last.
When material is available the construction goes 3’4th mile per day but after
one day’s work generally there is one or two days wait for material. They say
that a broad gauge is completed from Darbisiyah (4 or 5 miles west of Helif)
to 5 miles short of Mardin whence there is a narrow gauge extension from
Diarbekir, but to 3rd Division point cannot be stated by them.

Continuation my 76575 of 10th November. Will raise Corps from waiting
men of Nos. 2, 3 and 7 Porter Corps Depots.
Eventually propose to replace this Corps by a Jail Corps for which arrange
ments are being made now.
Propose asking you to distribute the personnel of former corps as reinforce
ments to Nos. 2, 3 and 7 Corps as soon as Jail Corps arrives at Mesopotamia.
