Deserters of the 1st and 5th Infantry Regiments were captured Adhaim
river, December 5th and Dialha Pront, November 29th. A precis of their
statements and those of prisoners captured during operations 3rd to 6th
December on the Dialba Pront from the 16th, ISfch, 156th Infantry Regiments,
4th Artillery Regiment and 6th Divisional Squadron is as follows. Work of
individual soldier has become very heavy owing to low effectives.
Boots are generally serviceable but majority of troops have only patched
summer clothing and thin great-coats. Rations meagre. Pay is much in
arrears and is issued in notes. Deficiency of material necessaries and comforts
has caused the morale of the troops to become low and desertion is rife.
Since Ali Ihsan’s transfer from command of 13th to 4th Army Corps
increase in desertion and decrease in rations has been accentuated. The
increasing cold has also possibly had some effect.
Ali Ihsan refused to risk complications * with tribes by exacting punish
ment from Kurds who murdered German
Captain Schultz in Persia ; a quarrel with
Khalil resulted and the transfer referred to above was made. Reinforcements
* Change of figure.
