Situation in Mesopotamia and Persia, 9th Decemher 1917.
1. Tigris Between 3rd and Sth December General - Marshall deli
vered a blow against the Turkish positions
on the Jebel Hamrin ridge on the right
bank of the Diala. Our operations were
successful, and we reached Kara Tepe (23
■j _j\ ^ ^ p miles from Deli Abbas and 95 from Bagh
dad) on the otb. Our forces were then withdrawn, and our right flank now rests
on the line Sakaltutan Pass-Kizil Bobat-Khaniqin. Bicharakoff’s Russian
detachment co-operated energetically on our extreme right flank.
Our captures during these operations include 249 prisoners, 2 field guns and
1 machine gun. We actually buried 87 Turkish dead.
, , casualties totalled 28 killed and 172 wounded, while the Russians
lost 1 killed and 8 wounded.
No doubt anticipating a further British advance the Turks on 5th Decem
ber set fire to the Kifri coal mine, which was observed to be still burnino- on
the 6th. 3
