occurred in the Southern Division
The bulk of the decrease occurred
in Sind where scanty rainfall and
limited inundations restricted cultivation.^ In 1878-79 this
Province showed a large increase of Rs. 10,85,158, and therefore
the receipts for the present year still exceed those for 1877-78.
The Northern Division also shows a very considerable decrease,
which occurred chiefly in the Surat Collectorate under the head of
“ miscellaneous/'’ The decrease in the Central Division occurred
almost exclusively in the Ahmednagar and Sholapur Collectorates,
and is due to much land having been thrown out of cultivation in
consequence of the famine.
The total amount of remissions was Rs. 2,76,988 against
Rs. 4 64 522 in 1878 - 79 ,but in these totalsareincludedRs. 1,08,935
and Rs. ’ 1,13,345, respectively, for an item in Kanara which is
annually to be reduced until adjusted on the survey of that collee-
torate being completed. Excluding this item the remissions for the
year under review amounted to Rs. 92,029 on account of introduc
tion of revised rates and Rs. 76,024 for all other causes. The
former amount is distributed over five collectorates, but the bill s
of it was remitted in Hyderabad and Kanara. The latter amount
is insignificant and calls for no special remark.
