duly as compared with 674, 228 and 116 acres in the
357 acr , Progress has been made with the storage works

/ e was resumed as a relief work and considerable progress
with the earth-works of the dam. Expenditure amounted

babul and other trees ; these have now grown into fine timber, the
thinning of which will annually produce a considerable revenue.
Rs 21 048 were expended on restoring the old Begum Courteous or formal title for (usually Muslim) women of elite status, especially of Turko-Mongol lineage. Tank con
tinued as^a relief work. Progresswas similarly made with the Much-
kundi Tank. Various surveys in connection with irrigation pro
jects were carried on, but no work of importance was undertaken.
Early in the year His Excellency the late Governor of Bombay
visited the locality of the Gokak Canal scheme and proposed to
include in it the Jamkhandi territory and a portion of the Kaladgi
Collectorate. An estimate for the survey was prepared and has been
sanctioned. Meantime the first section of the project has been
commenced, including a weir and headworks on the Ghatprabha
River, with2| miles of main canal and a branch canal 11 miles in
length. This section commands a tract of country measuring 25,000
acres of goodculturable land. The cost is estimated at Es.4,lo,72o
audit will irrigate 8,600 acres. A convict gang 600 to 800 strong
was employed, throughout the year, on the first two miles oi the
canal, which is in hard rock cutting. They did work to e

for a storage tank. The catchment basin measures 155 square

Annual administration report of the Bombay Presidency The name given to each of the three divisions of the territory of the East India Company, and later the British Raj, on the Indian subcontinent. , providing a summary record of the main events and developments in each department of the Government of Bombay From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India. From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. during the financial year 1879-80. The report was printed at the Government Central Press, Bombay [Mumbai] in 1880.
