income from the License-tax amounted to Rs. 99,411. The total
Government demand amounted to Rs. 14,47,556 equivalent to
Rs. 2-0-1 per head of the whole population.
The number of births and deaths registered were 4,793 and 6,927
respectively, for 10 months only. The public health was indifferent-
small-pox was prevalent throughout the year, nor was cholera
absent. There were 6 dispensaries. The number of persons
treated was 1,457 in-patients against 1,664 in 1878-79 and
44,698 out-patients against 44,507. The number of primary
vaccinations was 19,697 compared with 18,052 in the previous year
and the number of re-vaccinations was 5,918 against 8,226.
There were 3 schools of superior grades and 2 normal schools
as against 4 and 2 respectively in 1878-79. The attendance
shows a slight falling off. The number of primary schools
on the contrary, increased from 45 to 53, and attendance in them
from 2,431 to 3,127.

Revision settlement operations are in progress in this district.
No settlement was, however, introduced into any subdivision
during the year. Some fresh land has been taken np for cultiva
tion ; but the arable unoccupied area is still returned at the high
figure 1,323,887 acres. The area cultivated was 629,634 acres
against 893,717 in the previous years. No city survey is in
progress. The estates of 3 minors were under charge of the
Collector.
The proportion of police to population is 1 to 639, and to area
1 to 7*25 square miles. The amount of crime increased very
slightly. In cognizable cases 4,839 persons were arrested, and of
them 61 per cent, were convicted. The value of property stolen
was Rs. 83,179, of which 62 per cent., as against 53 per cent, last
year, was recovered. The number of civil suits * instituted
between private parties was 9,522 as compared with 6,107 in the
previous year. Altogether 9,282 were disposed of. 9,120 were
for property or claims of less than Rs. 500 value. The applications
for execution of decrees numbered 4,003 ; of these 1,725 were
partially or wholly executed.
No fresh suit was filed against Government. Of the two cases
pending one was decided against Government and the other re
mains pending. Registration transactions were 4,515, and receipts
Rs. 14,362, as compared with 4,108 and Rs. 12,990 last year.
There were 2 city and 9 town municipalities. The population
aggregates 95,371 souls. The aggregate income and expenditure
was Rs. 2,66,336 and Rs. 2,25,636 respectively, and the incidence
of taxation per head varied from Rs. 6-9-10 to Re. 0-5-2.
The Indus Valley State Railway traverses the district from north
to south. There are about 1,600 miles of good road, but the
river Indus carries most of the trafiSc of the collectorate. The
