police was 2,193, or 197 more than last year. These involved the
arrest of 2,570 persons, of whom 2,274 were sent for trial and
] 277, or 54 per cent., were convicted. The percentage in
1878-79 was better, viz., 62. The property stolen during the
year is valued at Rs. 1,18,919 as compared with Rs. 79,997 last
year. Rs. 87,372 worth was recovered, giving a percentage of 74
against 40. There was thus a slight increase of crime during
the year and results generally are unsatisfactory as compared
with the preceding one. Of the stolen property Rs. 70,671 worth
concerned a single case and consisted chiefly of bonds.
The Criminal Courts consist of those of the Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency.

holding powers of a District Magistrate, 8 first class Magistrates,
and 13 second class Magistrates, 12 third class Magistrates, and 2
officers having powers less than those of a third class Magistrate.
The number of persons dealt with during the year was 3,014
compared with 2,853 last year. In all 1,648 were convicted,
and 134 concerned in 68 cases were awaiting trial when the
year closed. Ramdurg was the only State in which fewer persons
were dealt with than during 1878-79. The total number of
offences reported was 1,876 as compared with 1,769. The most
serious offences were 5 murders, 5 dacoities, 4 robberies, 3 cases
of forgery, and 822 of theft. Fifty-seven appeals were filed, of
which 4 remained undisposed of. Of the remaining 53, in one case
the application was rejected, in 34 the sentences were confirmed,
in 7 they were modified, and in 11 reversed. Last year the total
number of appeals was 32.
There are only 2 jails, properly so called, at Miraj and at
Mudhol. At Jamkhandi, Ramdurg and Kurundvad there are
small prisons and at 13 other places there are lock-ups. The
total 18 is the same as previously. Two hundred and twenty-
eight prisoners remained from last year, and 986 were admitted-
total 1,118 as compared with 1,263. The daily average was 272,
and 261 were still in custody when the year closed. The total cost
was Rs. 23,933. The prisoners are chiefly employed on out-door
work and in keeping the streets of the town clean. Their health
was generally good. Five persons broke jail, but one of them
was re-captured.
The number of suits filed was 2,711 and these, including 706
arrears, constituted a total of 3,417 for disposal—some 250 more
than in 1878-79. Two thousand nine hundred and eighty-seven
cases were decided and thus arrears remain at 430. The work
on the whole has been satisfactory.
Registration has been introduced in all the States excepting
the two Kurundvads. One thousand two hundred and ninety-
oight documents were registered as compared with 1,148. The
foes realized Rs. 4,962 and expenditure amounted to Rs. 3,109.

Annual administration report of the Bombay Presidency The name given to each of the three divisions of the territory of the East India Company, and later the British Raj, on the Indian subcontinent. , providing a summary record of the main events and developments in each department of the Government of Bombay From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India. From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. during the financial year 1879-80. The report was printed at the Government Central Press, Bombay [Mumbai] in 1880.
