VITAL STATISTICS AND PUBLIC HEALTH,
The license fees levied under Act III. of 1878 from
persons engaged in any trade, dealing or industry pro
duced a revenue of £242,981 as compared with £240,426
last year. Of this sum £190,007 were credited to Im
perial Revenue and £52,974 to Provincial Services^
The cost of collection amounted to £4,069. The total
number of persons assessed was 402,199, and the
incidence per head thus came to about 12 shillings.
The revenue for the current year will show a considerable
decrease on that at present under review, as the minimum
income liable to the tax has been raised from £10 to
£50 per annum in order to exempt the very large number
of persons paying the lower rates of license fees on small
incomes.
Receipts from Local Funds, incorporated with Provin
cial Services, amounted to £862,857 as compared with
£850,407 last year. Expenditure came to £349,081
against £343,402. The income from excluded funds
aggregated £63,117, of which £57,466 were disbursed.
They are 11 in number and are regulated by special
laws and limited to certain localities or to special
objects.
Sufficient allusion has been made to the subject of
municipal revenue in a previous section.
VITAL STATISTICS AND THE
PUBLIC HEALTH-
The vital statistics are compiled by the village officers
under the supervision of the Sanitary Department which
is also the Vaccination Department. The district
revenue officers, too, check and test the returns kept.
The registration of deaths is now kept fairly accurately ;
that of births is still very incomplete owing to the
difficulty of ascertaining the events.
The number of births registered during the calendar
year 1879 was 287,870 ; the mean number for the 5
previous years was 314,807. The birth-rate per mille

Annual administration report of the Bombay Presidency The name given to each of the three divisions of the territory of the East India Company, and later the British Raj, on the Indian subcontinent. , providing a summary record of the main events and developments in each department of the Government of Bombay From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India. From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. during the financial year 1879-80. The report was printed at the Government Central Press, Bombay [Mumbai] in 1880.
The report is divided into three parts. Part I comprises a report ‘SUMMARY’ (ff 9-55). Part II (ff 56-265) comprises chapters I-IX. Part III comprises ‘Statistical Returns’ pertaining to chapters I-VII and IX (ff 266-429).
