In addition it may be necessary owing to the situation in Persia to drop
en route part of armoured car squadron above mentioned in order to take the
place of Baratoff’s forces or to act in support of them.
( 2 ) In consequence of the situation in Russia the only routes open to us
for communication with the Caucasus are those via Persia. It is recognised
that routes to Tiflis are difficult whether (a) by land from Kermanshah
Hamadan or Kasvin, via Tabriz or (b) by sea via Enzeli, Caspian and Baku ;
but the passage of detachments mentioned in paragraph 1 together with that
of subsequent reinforcements as necessary, should be obtainable by the expen
diture of money and by energy.
(3) In consideration of the above scheme, the ability of the Turks to
interfere in passage of detachments on Section between the Jebell Hamrin and
Karind is the only point which gives us real anxiety.
I should be glad of your opinion as to what measures you consider neces
sary or possible to secure the safe passage of such detachments as it may be
necessary to send, bearing in mind our requirements as above stated.
(4<) To give more than approximate figures and dates is at present not
possible, but the object we have in view is that there should arrive at Basrah
about end of Pebruary and end of March respectively the following
(a) A party of about 20 officers.
{b) An armoured car detachment of about 100 Motor vehicles and 500
men.
