Port Barges.
I have the honour to report that the following matters have received
particular attention.
1. Construction of 80 barges for Port Work, which, with a number of
second hand barges being taken up, will bring the total up to 100 .
The D. I. W. T. asked for 100 barges of from 80 to 60 tons, and suggested
they should be taken up at Calcutta and transported to Basrah on decks of
steamers. This method of delivery has been considered too slow owing to the
very small number of steamers running from Calcutta to Basrah. There are
no steamers running from Calcutta to Bombay, and only an occasional coal
steamer direct to Basrah. It was decided to build 80, and a design has been
prepared by the River Craft Board, a spare copy of which will be forwarded
you. Out of the 80, 70 barges are to be constructed thus, 50 in Calcutta
and 20 in Bombay.
This design has been made to utilize sizes of plates which are in India,
and to enable transport by rail to Karachi for those building in Calcutta, as
there are a number of steamers sailing from the former port on whose decks
the barges can be shipped. With regard to the other 10, the Director, I. W. T.,
asked that square pontoons 70 ft.x22 ft. X 4ft. be built at Bombay for direct
shipment to Basrah, but it is very doubtful whether sufficient or even
xV' plates are available in India, in which case the same type as the 70
mentioned above will have to be built. The materials for these are being
collected, angles being rolled by Tata Steel Works and rivets being made.
