Your 36606-M. ,E. 3-10603 of 12th August (No. Dy. 54732.) Mile ton
nage for June quarter is specially favourable as this was period of good water
with barges loaded deep while craft had been released from Field Army for
the time being. This tonnage, moreover, includes marine fuel and actual effec
tive mile tonnage was considerably less. Liabilities for this force have nearly
increased since forecast was made of 5,000,000 ton miles per week of 12,000
tons per day by (alter ?) and requirements of intermediate garrison have in
creased. It is true that we have received
undecodabie? an effective million tons per week extra
from India but at this period of year fleet can now with difficulty give us 600
tons a day by water and 600 tons at Kut for onward transit by rail in addition
to requirements of intermediate garrisons and movements of troops. Effective

The file also contains a ‘Report on the conservancy of the Shatt-el-Arab [Shatt al-Arab] River from the Port of Basra to the Persian Gulf’ by Brigadier-General George Buchanan, Director of Port Administration and Conservancy, dated 22 March 1917, including nine maps of the Shatt-el-Arab River, the port of Basra, Mohammerah [Khorramshahr] bar, and the channel from Fao [Al-Faw] down the river.
