The qaimakam of Jezireh-ibn-Omar was reported on the 7th
June to be at Keroar (25 miles north of Zakho) with 100 Turkish
regulars, and a report from Zakho on June 9th Indicates that
Turkish Officials are trying to engineer an attack on Mosul from
the North, which attack, if successful, will be the signal for
further outbreaks on the Zakho frontier.
Jemil Bey with *0 Sherifian Officers is in co.mand of a
force of 400 men who left Dair-ez-Zor on May 19th and was on the
Khabur River on June 7th. He addressed a letter to the Yezidi
tribe calling on them to Join the "Army of North Iraq" under
Amir Abdulla "King of Iraq" in an advance which is to be made
on Mosul via Sinjar and Tel Afar at the end of Ramadan (16th
June). The chief of the Yezidi, however, sent a message to the
G.O.G. Mesopotamia on the 11th June to the effect that he has
gathered together all his anned men and will co-operate with us
against any Arabs near the Sinjar.
A wire from G.O.C. Mesopotamia dated the 13th June mentioned
reports of possible disturbances in the Kerbela area which were
nipped in the bud by the prompt despatch of armoured ears. He
also foreshadowed the possibility of trouble in the region of
the Lower Hai.
That this apprehension was not groundless is proved by the
fact that a somewhat serious rising of Arabs occurred in the
Samawa - Rumeitra - N ejf area on the 1st July, necessitating
the despatch of reinforcements, both military and R.A.P., and
armoured trains.
