(ii) The Tigris in the Mosul Vilayet.
(iii) Urumia - Wazna - Kurdistan.
(iv) Caspian Sea - Ramadan - Baghdad.

(a)* At the present time the greatest activity is being
felt on (i) and (ii)*
As regards (i) - tribal unrest and consequent fighting
of greater or less severity have prevailed since the forcible
occupation of Dair-es-Zor by Ramadan Shalash in December, 1919*
This hostility is inspired by the Young Arabs of Damascus who
aspire to a "Baghdadi Officer* regime in Mesopotamia, and oppose
any attempt to "divide Arabia" by fixing a frontier between
Mesopotamia and Syria.
In April the situation quieted down as a result of reprisals
taken by us, but, after a brief pause, the raiders have become
rather bolder than before. At the same time, in April, hostile
action became apparent on line (ii) with the avowed intention of
isolating Mosul by cutting the Tigris L* of C. and has continued
to date, culminating in the attack on Tel Afar on June 3rd, when
all the British officials were murdered.
Gr.O.C. Mesopotamia further reports that there are indications
of an impending attack under Turkish instigation from the direction
of Shematch, which if successful, will be the signal for further
outbreaks on the Zakho frontier.
That the activities on lines (i) and (ii) are crystallising
into a concerted plan of action seems clearly indicated by the

The volume consists of correspondence, memoranda, drafts, and departmental notes relating to rebellion against British mandatory rule in Mesopotamia [approximately corresponding to present-day Iraq], later known as the Iraqi Revolt of 1920.
The volume covers the period from the start of unrest in May 1920 to British imposition of control in October of the same year. The majority of the volume comprises reports from political officers across Mesopotamia on the situation in their respective divisions and districts.
Other matters discussed within the volume include:
- The suspected causes of the uprising, including fears of ‘Bolshevik’ and pro-Turkish influence
- Settlement of the border between Syria and Mesopotamia
- Military strategy and operations, including the need for reinforcements
