I forward herewith a few remarks on the general situation
in this Division,
The Id - al - Fitr, in spite of wild r4r. 10Urs during the
preceding week, passed off successfully and without disorder of
any sort.
During the two or three days prior to the festival, I
visited Shahrahan, ftizil Robat and Khaniqin and interviewed
numerous leading townsmen and Shailchs, and spoke very plainly
to them.

Man dal i appears to be very quiet, but I have not had time
to go there, and do not want to bo so far away from Baqubah at
present.
During tne xestival,_ one tropp of levies was despatched to
Khaniqin and a troop to Shahraban. Both have now been withdrawn.
The Jews have been very nervous and many of them began to
remove their goods from the shops, with the intention of proceed
ing to Baghdad. This movement was stopped and they were warned
that any further action of this kind would result in their being
forbidden to trade in the t<rtms.
Humours of the immediate Independence of -Iraq and withdraw^
of British forces have been zealously spread amongst the tribes,
and acting on people so easily excited, have had the effect of
encouraging the more unruly members to attempt small raids and
obberies on tneir neighbours and on the Persian Road, I arranged
for Corarat: Levy, Baqubah and one troop to go two days ago, to
Daltawah, to deal with two small raids.

The volume includes a divider which gives the subject number, the year the subject file was opened, the subject heading, and a list of correspondence references by year. This is placed at the back of the correspondence. A second divider is included, for File 4722/1918 Part 7, entitled ‘Mesopotamia: Sir A. Wilson’s invitation to Syrian Baghdadis’. The subject 4722 (Mesopotamia) consists of ten volumes, IOR/L/PS/10/755-764. The volumes are divided into twelve parts, with parts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 11 and 12 comprising one volume each. Part 10 is missing. Part 7, entitled ‘Mesopotamia: Sir A. Wilson’s invitation to Syrian Baghdadis’, was transferred to File 5268/20 Parts 1 and 2 (see IOR/L/PS/10/913).
