The Egyptian seed failed. The cultivators are willing
to give the New Orleans seed a further trial, and admit
that hitherto the State has produced nothing to compare
with it.
On the whole of the area (74a. 34g.) devoted in the
Khandeish Collectorate to experiments with Hingunghaut
seed, part of which was newly obtained from the Central
Provinces and the remainder of which was selected seed
from the produce of the preceding years’ experiments, the
yield amounted to an average of 94 lbs. of clean cotton per
acre, and some portions are estimated to have produced
from 140 to 150 lbs. per acre. The causes of the difference
in yield are thus explained. At Julgaum half the land
had lain fallow for a considerable number of years, and, of
course, produced much more than the other portion, no part
of either half having received any manure. The land at
Nusseerabad, though manured, was of a poor description,
and that at Nimborah was infested with a noxious weed
difficult to eradicate. With all this, the average of 94 lbs.
per acre may be considered to be a very fair yield, and the
cotton produced was generally pronounced to be of excel
lent quality and to be in excellent condition; the latter
being the result of the great care taken in picking it. The
selected seed used in these experiments was obtained from
a first selection. From the Cotton Commissioner’s own
observation of the fields in two of the localities, viz., Jul-
gam and Nusseerabad, the plants were decidedly superior
in appearance to those of the ryots in the fields adjoining,
and it w r as also ultimately ascertained that a larger yield
was obtained from them. The preceding season in which
the seed w r as selected was a very unfavorable one; on the
present occasion it has not been so, and for next season’s
experiments very fine seed has been obtained. The opinion
