FOREST DEPARTMENT.
\_Bomlay”\
Canara Collectorate.
Bomanhully Plantation. —This plantation, which is about 20 acres in
extent, was commenced in 1865, and the number of teak plants now grow
ing in it is about 23,000, from 1 to 12 feet in height. The total cost up
to date has been Ks. 2,803-3-9, or 8 plants per Rupee. It is not capable
of extension, and nothing beyond taking care of it during the past year has
been done. The soil is unequal, and not very good. The plants are, how
ever, much improved.
Singutgherry Plantation. —This plantation consists of something over
60 acres, and can be extended considerably. It was begun in April 1866,
and in 1867-68 and 1868-69 about 62,000 seedlings were planted out, at a
cost of Rs. 3,176-7-0. During the latter part of 1868-69 a very heavy
and continuous fall of rain flooded a part of the plantation, and caused the
plants to rot away in great numbers. It has since been drained, and during
the past year 28,877 seedlings were planted out, at a cost of Rs. 1,578-15-6,
or about 18 plants per Rupee. The plants are strong and healthy, and from
2 to 24 feet in height.
Three plantations have been closed in the Balaghaut Division.
Murdy Plantation. —This teak plantation was commenced in 1865-66,
and is about 82 acres in extent. The number of plants now growing is
2,25,191, of which 51,700 were planted out in 1869-70. The total ex
penditure up to the 31st March last amounted to Rs. 17,900-14-0, of which
Rs. 3,748-14-8 were for the planting operations of 1869-70. Here we
have nearly 15 plants per Rupee, against 5 of the previous years. All
the plants of this plantation are in a good state of preservation, and the
average height of the plants from 1 to 25 feet.
Cadra Plantation. —This was commenced in 1867-68. The area planted
is 73 acres, and the number of teak plants growing upon it is 1,28,369, of
which 90,000 were planted during the year 1869-70. The total expenditure
up to the end of March last amounts to Rs. 9,238-9-8, of which Rs. 4,156-11-4
were for 1869-70. This is a far more favorable result than even that
obtained on the Murdy plantation, and, compared with previous year’s plant
ing, shows 21| plants per Rupee, against 7j.
The ravages of a jungle fire have been met by cutting the old stems
close to the ground, and the new shoots that have succeeded are far superior
to the original plants, and are in a flourishing condition, though it is possible
that an excess of pith may form from the over-rapid growth brought about
by the forcing process of the fire.
