FOREST DEPARTMENT,
The building of two cargo boats for use in the Payen-
ghaut Division of the Canara Forests for the conveyance of
firewood to the coast has been completed.
5. The financial results, as contrasted with those of
the preceding year, showing upon the whole a steady im
provement in the receipts with a gradual decrease in ex
penditure, are highly satisfactory.
6. There were during the year 624 convictions of
forest offences; the fines levied amounted to Rs. 7,689-8-0;
and the value of the property confiscated was estimated at
Rs. 2,898-7-11.
7. In the Payenghaut Division of the Canara Forests
the following roads were repaired :—A road from Codra to
foot of Unshee Ghaut, about one and a-half miles, at a cost
of Rs. 75; road along the banks of the Kalanuddy from
Codra to Holgudcla, distance about 27 miles, at a cost of
Rs. 1,377-7-7; and three miles of the road through Goond, at
a cost of Rs. 171-8-6. The repair of the remaining part of
the last mentioned road, and the Goond timber-slip, lias,
since April last, been completed. This road is the most
useful of any in the forest of the S. D., as it runs through
a difficult country full of teak and other valuable timber
trees.
8. A forest road was constructed up the Dumkowrie
and Koldurree valley, situated at the south of the Poorun-
dhur fort in the Poona Collectorate, and has cost Rs. 370-10-1.
This road was lined out and commenced on the 20th
January 1870; it follows the contour of the foot of the
mountain, and is about five miles long. It wfill open out
the valuable teak forests growing on the surrounding hills,
and will increase the value of the forest produce here
generally.
