The Resident informed the deputation that the matter
was too grave for him to dispose of, but that he would
forward their apology to Government, and await instructions.
This was accordingly submitted to Government, together with
another letter of apology subsequently received from Syud
Azzan, confirming the apologies tendered by Khalilee and
his deputation.
It appeared that while apologizing for the fact of firing
on a British Gunboat having had place, the Muscat Autliori-
ties were very sore at the circumstances of the case.
In his reports to Government the

complained of outrages, tyranny, and interference as exercised
against British subjects and property by the local Authorities,
and he seemed apprehensive for his own safety and that of
British subjects.
On this matter the Resident made personal inquiries at
Muscat, and in reporting proceedings in regard to firing on
the 44 Clyde” as above detailed, and in relation to Muscat affairs
in general, he submitted to Government that he was unable to
share in the apprehensions of the
Political Agent

as he was aware, no injury to British subjects had been proved
against the Muscat Authorities; that British subjects whom
he had met and questioned in all parts of the town of Muscat,
and whom he had received on board by deputation, made no
complaint of personal oppression; and that their tw r o griev
ances, as stated by themselves, were, firstly, that the law of
debtor and creditor was administered according to the Maho-
medan religious law; and secondly, that the subjects of Muscat
being forbidden to purchase tobacco, the trade profits of Bri
tish subjects, as sellers of that article, were injuriously affected.
The Government of India ordered that Syud Azzan’s
apology should be accepted unconditionally. It was clone
accordingly, and the apology was read out and accepted publicly
at the Political
Agency
