Instructions noted.
Due Tigris Corps headquarters this evening and will stay there until after
present operations.
Telegram No. W. G.-5, dated 24th April 1916.
From— General Giilman,
To—The Chief of the Imperial General Staff, London.
Personal and Secret. The Tigris Corps has lost heavily in the recent
fighting and is now in my opinion lacking in numbers and dash necessary for
success should another attack be made by us as proposed in Army Commander’s
telegram of 22nd April.
The enemy is fighting with great determination and counter-attacked with
vigour after the recent attacks by our 3rd and 7th Divisions.
I consider that any further attempt to relieve Kut-al-Amarah with our
present forces is unlikely to be successful and may cause a more serious situa
tion to develop.
Telegram No. W. G.>6, dated 27th April 1916.
From—General Gillman,
To—The Chief of the Imperial General Staff. London.
Reference your 15736-M. 0.-964 of 25th April.
I have the following remarks to make.
The Tigris Corps is strong enough to hold its present line, and to threaten
the communications of any Turkish force moving down the Hai against Nasi-
riyah but if the Turkish Army receives appreciable reinforcements these with
the troops now investing Kut could move either against Nasiriyah or round
our left flank south of the Um-el-Brahm while this Corps is contained by the
force now opposite to it.
Besides affecting Russia and prestige any retirement would also affect the
Beni Lam Arabs who would partly or altogether combine against us according
to extent of our retirement and their action might disturb Persia.
If the Turkish force is reinforced we should he in a better position at
Shaikh Sa’ad as regards our left flank. South of Shaikh Sa’ad the only advan
tage is that of supply.
