Intelligence. Euphrates Line. —With the exception that further con
firmation has been received regarding the fighting at Karbala mentioned in
my telegram of 6th May, No. I. G.-2746 {By. No. 52651), there is no military
activity. J
,, -A- l e ^ er from Shaikh Attiya Abu Galal, the most powerful secular
authority m Najaf, has now been received at Nasiriyah, in which he states that
in the fighting referred to above, the inhabitants of Karbala, reinforced by
tribesmen, killed 300 Turkish soldiers. It is also stated in the letter, which
left Najaf about 20th May, that the Turks directed bombs and shells against
the holy places at Karbala.

Your 54363, May 17th,
, appointment of Mr. P. H. Brown as Traffic Superintendent at Basrah
under Sir George Buchanan, is concurred in by Admiralty, it being understood
that among his duties will be included advice on questions such as repairs
methods of loading and unloading, despatch and general management of
steamers, storage, bunkers and ballast.
As regards the Goyernment of India not having been consulted, before the
appointment was made, the Admiralty obtained the approval of the India
Office.
