of 11th April (Dy> No. 48283) and my 1359-3(4?)-A. of 29th April (Dy. No.
51303) I asked if supply can be expedited. Two months have now nearly
elapsed since my original request and up to date I have been advised of
despatch of only 55 (menials ?) of this class. I fully appreciate there are diffi
culties in obtaining these men but at the same time I would submit that it is
vitally important that I may be supplied with the balance due without further
delay. I have now to cope with a severe outbreak of cholera which at present
exists in the entire Tigris line from Basrah to the front. Prior to departure of
Medical Commission on 16th May I was requested to arrange for extensive
and immediate increase of sweepers with Force “ D.” I have already explained
in detail Arab sweepers are neither obtainable here nor suitable for work
required. Therefore till receipt of the necessary number of sweepers which
I have asked for I cannot effectively cope with the cholera nor can I give effect
to recommendations of Medical Commission. Lately it has been ascertained
that there is possibility that Egypt can suppy sweepers. Would suggest that
you institute enquiries and if available arrange for (some ?) to be supplied from
that source. But in any case I must earnestly beg that the supply of sweepers
he expedited.
