Begins. 6444 A. M. D.-2-290. Telegraph whether arrangements for preser
vation of health of troops are all that you wish. If there are any defects state
what they are, mention requirements in personnel and material. Bnds. I have
replied as follows — Begins. H.-389, 16th May. Reference your 6444, May
12th. Arrived Basrah May 13th. Arrangements at the Base for health of troops
and hospitals fairly satisfactory under local conditions except serious shortage
of electric lighting installation and punkhas. Shortage of technical and other
labour seriously delayed erection of hospital hutments and completion of water
supplies. Difficulties centre round river transport. Two hospital steamers
only available now. Sick and wounded are transported by supply steamers
and barges improvised for return journey. This arrangement highly unsatis
factory
An East India Company trading post.
, Require ten hospital river ships at once and ten launches for use of
medical services only. Proceed up river ? May 18th and will report by tele
graph on return. Ends.
