To—The General Officer Commanding*, Force “D ”, Kat-al-Amnrah.
Have received your telegram of 24th instant No. 697-42-Q. (Dy.
No. S-25215), and your telegram of 25th instant No. 697-48-Q,., Dy.
No. S-25323). The letter has been repeated to Director, Royal Indian Marine,
for necessary action. In the meantime Mr. Alexander, Railway Engineer
Officer, is proceeding to Mesopotamia without delay, as Colonel Bonner is not
available. The machinery etcetera, mentioned, in your 697-26-Q., (Dy.
No. S'24974) of 12 instant, as well as some additional plant which Mr. Alex
ander considers essential, is being taken with him. No other personnel but that
asked for in your above quoted telegram, and Mr. Harvey, a motor boat expert,
who, it was thought, will be useful to you, will be sent.
It is thought that, pending arrival in Mesopotamia of Mr. Alexander, any
steps towards the provision of flats as floating workshops should be deferred.
This refers to your 497-44-Q., (Dy. No. S -25209) and 697-47-Q,, (Dy.
No, S.-25217) of 24th instant.

Milton, age 42, formerly Sub-Lieutenant in Australian Naval Brigade with
10 years experience of motor boats in the United States, offers at own expense
to equip for service in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. , horse power 450 engine motor launch
25 to 30 feet long, 8 feet broad and two and half feet draught. Vessels will be
delivered at Bombay end of January. Wishes to be in charge of vessel with
military temporary rank of Lieutenant. Please telegraph whether you accept
officer.

I am directed to convey the sanction of the Government of India to the
expenditure, estimated at Rs. 675 per
mensem as noted in the margin, on
account of the maintenance and working
expenses of the motor launch presented
by the St. John Ambulance Association
for employment as an ambulance launch
with Indian Expeditionary Force “ D ”.
The driver will be engaged on the same terms and conditions of service as
sanctioned in Army Department No. H.-6800, dated the 5th August 1915 ;.the
tindal Non-European boatswain or head of a group of labourers. and khalasi Used by the British officials to refer to a non-European labourer, especially one employed on a ship. will receive free rations on the field service scale of rations
for Indian troops and followers.
2. The expenditure involved is debitable to His Majesty’s Imperial Gov
