An appreciation of intelligence regarding the Near East is given below :—
“It appears likely that the German attempt to penetrate to Constantinople
will be attended with success, their object being, not so much to scatter their
forces by tying up troops in the Ealkans, hut rather to enable the Turkish
Army to expel us from Gallipoli by supplying munitions of war. As a result
200,000 Turks would he free to operate against us in Mesopotamia or Egypt
or in both these places. The Turkish movement on Mesopotamia consequent
on a cessation of our threatened attack on Constantinople from the Dardanelles
could only be stopped at Alexandretta, and this "would necessitate the occupa
tion of Aleppo, for which a considerable force would be required.”
