In view of fact that terms of my appointment from Government of India
do not give me any other status in war zone than that of Chief Political
Officer on Army Commander’s Staff, Sir J. Nixon is of opinion that such
communications as those above cited should more properly be addressed to him
and not to me.
His views seem correct in principle and I told him I would mention
matter informally.

5 officers and 58 men have arrived Bombay per “ Castalia ” for aviation
unit in Mesopotamia. This refers to telegram No. 8000 (Z)y. No. S.-21818),
dated the 18th September 1915, from the Secretary, War Office, to the address
of the Quartermaster General in India.
We shall be glad to be informed by telegraph the rates to be drawn by
above personal. In this connection, please refer to our telegram No. H.-7221,
(Hy. No. S.-18885), dated 21st August, pointing out the necessity for giving
uniform rates of pay to all personnel serving with flying unit in Mesopotamia,
and your telegram No. M.-23297 (Dy. Ao. S.-19852), dated the 30th August,
in which you stated that a further communication will be made on the
subject.
We have engaged subordinate personnel from Australia at the monthly rates
noted below. These are in addition to the ranks enumerated in our telegram
No. H.-752S (not in Diary) dated 6th September 1915 :—

The volume contains a chronological list of brief summaries of papers relating to the activities of the Indian Expeditionary Force D (also known as the Mesopotamia Expeditionary Force) between 16 and 31 October 1915. This is accompanied by appendices containing copies and extracts of these papers, which include letters, memoranda, and telegrams.

  • Reinforcements for Force D, including medical personnel

  • Details of a potential aviation unit in Mesopotamia.
