The following telegram is addressed to Chief of the General Staff, and
repeated Secretary of State, 12th Division and Inspector-General of Communi
cation.
On morning 26th, 6th Division reached, without being opposed, line
Nakhailat, left bank (sheet 2 L sq. A 216) Chahhela, right bank (sheet 2 L
i sq. 217). Morning 26th Aeroplane reconnaissance was again fired on and in
the afternoon artillery fire was also opened on our advanced post. No
casualties. No activity apart from above shown by enemy and little change
has been noticed by aeroplane reconnaissance. Several contact land mines
were exploded on 26th by our advanced troops. Good details of Sinn position
have been given by photograph recently taken by our aviators. Included are
what are apparently a wire entanglement with a triple line and 3 distinct systems
of (?) land mines.
6th Division was accompanied by boat bridge across Tigris in advance on
26th and has been placed across river in Nakhailat-Chahhela position. A bad
landing, which will entail 2 days* inactivity, was made by Martinsyde aeroplane
on 26th afternoon. As a result a flesh wound in face was received by Captain
Petrie who is also severely shaken. Devoting 27th September to further
reconnaissance and feints.

To—The General Officer Commanding, Force e< D,” Basrah.
I am directed to inform you that in consequence of the inadequacy of the
stocks on hand of “jerseys” and of “coats, warm, followers” of service
patterns, your demands for these articles will, in part, be met wdth “ cloth
waistcoats ” (i.e, serge waistcoats lined with flannel), and wdth “coats, warm,
followers ” of a special pattern that closely resembles that of the “coats, warm,
troops.” Also in part compliance with your demand for additional blankets,
to enable you to supply each man in December with a third blanket, a stock of
country blankets of non-service pattern will be sent.
Further, I am to inform you that in consequence of the extent of the
demands recently received for socks, it will be necessary to send in lieu a
certain quantity of foot bandages.

This telegram is addressed to the Inspector-General of Communications,
Force “ D,” Basrah, with reference to telegram No. 4921—52*198-E., dated
25th instant from Embarkation, Bombay, with a request that the General Officer
Commanding may be informed. It has been repeated to the Officer Com
manding, Masqat.

The successor to the Court of Directors. , and Bertram Blakiston Cubitt, Under-Secretary of State for India, on the subject of aviation units for service in India and Mesopotamia, which include tables of personnel and vehicles required (ff 91-96)
  • The Quartermaster General’s Embarkation Statement, listing reinforcements and details for Force D which embarked at Bombay [Mumbai] and Karachi (ff 128-134).
