Until u Varela ” is ready about the first week in October no Hospital
Ship light enough to cross the bar will be available Director, Royal Indian
Marine, reports that weather conditions will not permit of the lightening of
the “Takada ” and “Madras” until about the middle of October. Measures
for embarking sick outside the bar should continue in the meantime.

To—The Chief of the General Staff.
Reference despatch of captured Turkish rifles and ammunition to Bombay
for onward transit to England should captured bayonets also be sent. They
are mostly in fair condition, and most of them could be made fit for use.
Their scabbards are unserviceable, but some of the lockets and tips might be
used again. Stock of captured bayonets is 3,200. 2,400 are for use with
Mauser rifle, and 800 with M. H. action rifles.

“ D,” wires. Begins. It is necessary that barges should not draw more
than three feet loaded, preferably less. Efficient oil pumps should be provided
for each barge. Ends.
Government sanction the construction of two 150 ton oil fuel barges with
draught of three feet for Eorce “ D.” Please report what extra cost, if any, is
involved by provision of oil pumps now asked for.

General Officer Commanding, Eorce “ D,” has represented that owing to
length of river line of communication it is essential during operations to have
fuel depbts for steamers at advanced bases. Also that recently difficulty has
been experienced in transporting and maintaining supply for oil burning
steamers owdng to want of proper means of carrying oil, which difficulties
may be accentuated. We have therefore authorized construction by Director,
Royal Indian Marine, of two 150 ton oil barges with draught of three feet to

- Discussions about how to govern holy places between the Basrah [Basra] Vilayet [a province under the Ottoman Empire] and Baghdad in anticipation of them coming under British control, and the extent to which the Persian Government should be consulted on this matter.
