. The Director, Royal Indian Marine, requested information on the dimensions, etc., of river craft ordered
from home for Force “ D ” so as to enable him to take action regarding the engagement of officers
In reply the Director, Royal Indian Marine, was given a copy of the despatch sent to the Secretary
of State asking for river craft, and he was asked what terms he recommended for the officers. "
The Base Commandant, Basrah, was informed that the “ Umeta,” with one dredger in tow had sailed on
the i 9 th September.
The Secretaty of State was asked to ascertain whether there was any truth in the rumour that British
prisoners of war in Turkey are granted certain unusual privileges, and if so to state what these are
as it was proposed to grant similar concessions to Turkish prisoners in India.
The General Officer Commanding, Force “ D,” was asked to give a forward estimate for the nest four
months for fodder.

Sir P. Cox asked that the export of gunny cloth, large amount of which have been used bv the militarv
should be permitted to Basrah. ^
The Government of India sanctioned the provision of two motor launches for the Assistant Director of
Telegraphs, Force “D,” and the General Officer Commanding, Force “ D,” was informed.
The Eesident, Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. , gave details of the recent Turkish outrage at Najaf, and the story of how
the local inhabitants had thrown off Turkish rule. This account was based on intercepted letters and
reliable reports. Sir P. Cox in another telegram stated that there was considerable hardship at the
holy places, and that he had tried to relieve it by sending up funds. The population. Sir P. Cox said
were praying for the advent of the British. * '
The General Officer Commanding, Force U D,” was asked for certain information regarding strengths of
British units in connection with men whese service expired next March.
The Secretary of State was informed of the objections raised by General Nixon to the reported withdrawal
of our consulate from Isfahan, and the hope was expressed that Grahame would not be permitted to
stay at Ahwaz.
Sir P. Cox recommended that a Press communique should be prepared for issue in case our troops should
be directed to advance on Baghdad after Kut-al-Amarah had been taken.

  • Copies of correspondence between Edmund George Barrow, Military Secretary, India Office The department of the British Government to which the Government of India reported between 1858 and 1947. The successor to the Court of Directors. , and Bertram Blakiston Cubitt, Under-Secretary of State for India, on the subject of aviation units for service in India and Mesopotamia, which include tables of personnel and vehicles required (ff 91-96)
  • The Quartermaster General’s Embarkation Statement, listing reinforcements and details for Force D which embarked at Bombay [Mumbai] and Karachi (ff 128-134).

The vast majority of material in the volume dates from September 1915, with the exception of a small amount of material which dates from May, June and August 1915.
