From—The General Oihcer Commanding, Force “ D Basrah.
To—The Chief of the General Staff. Simla.
It is understood that an expert chemist, who is responsible for maintaining
gas helmets in effective condition and for training troops in their use, is attached
to Head Quarters in France.
Request War Office be asked to despatch a chemist for this force at an
early date. Masks will deteriorate rapidly if not properly treated. To preserve
them, sprayers, spraying mixture and chalk are urgently required.
Consideration should be given to the question of devising a helmet, that
chould be used here in the hot weather.

It is reported by Marsh that according to prisoners the battalion of 11th
Regiment (see my telegram 17450) No. 57 ^ 53 ) was raised in Mosul and
is the 11th Model Rifle battalion.
Therefore report in Egypt Summary 24th May to May t^a^ 4^h Divi
sion had relieved 3rd Division on Sinai front is not contradicted.
Captured orders of 1 ith Army Corps indicate that 9th Division on Jun e
7th had arrived at Pirahmed.
Prisoners taken on 15th June state that road is being built via Hazro and
Shin from Diarbekir to Mush.
Addtessed Basrah ; repeated India and Egypt.

Begins. T. L.207.—Am obtaining Information. In the meantime you may
find the following translation of telegram from General Baratoff to the Chief ot
the Staff Caucasus, dated Kum, March 9th, 1916, of use.
When I paid a return visit to the Governor General Mitodudoula to-day,
I found the Chief religious dignitaries, guardians of the Kum shrines, with
him. The Governor General said these dignitaries had never come to visit any
one before. They were grateful to H. 1 . M. the Czar and H. I. H. the
Commander*in-Chief Caucasus for sending Russian troops. The holy city and
all Persia, they said, had been freed from a hostile scourge and civil war by
these troops. They had brought peace and order. They had earned the
