From—The General Officer Commanding, Force u D Basrah.
To—The Chief cf the General Staff, Simla.
Your 17035 (? 17935) of 9th June (Dy. No. 58917). Arrangements have
been made for first two (?to) sediment the water on river vessels used for
hospital purposes and then sterilise it by steam from the boiler. At present a
British N. C. O. is placed on the ship for water purification duties by sediment
ation followed by chlorination. If central tanks at Basrah and Amarah and
other places are erected it will not obviate the continuance of these arrange
ments. Major Carter does not seem to have been conversant with the present
sterilization arrangements with this force do not consider (he) or anyone (?)
is sufficiently acquainted with local conditions to be in a position to express an
authoritative opinion on this subject in Mesopotamia. As an. example the
quantity of water proposed by Major Carter to be stored is altogether
inadequate.
