(Despatched 7-45 P-M-) ( Diar y No. 60108)
From.—The Chief of- the General Staff, Simla.
To—The General Officer Commanding, Force “ D,” Basrah..
With reference to my letter No. 213999-69, dated 16th June 1916 (Dy. No.
54656)-
Shall be glad of very early information if any special clothing is likely to be
required this cold weather for British Troops. It required, will probably have to
be obtained from England; consequently, early demand desirable.
To—The Secretary of State for India.
River Craft for I. E. F. “ D.” Reference our telegram dated 8th June-
1916, No. H.-4867 (Dy. No. 58472). We have now received from the G. O. U,
Force “ D, 55 his estimate of the total requirements of river craft for the borce.
His calculation is based on a force of five Divisions, with a possible increase of
50 per cent ; he has also allowed for 25 per cent of the river fleet being out of
action for repairs, etc. It is estimated by General Lake that he icquires or
general transport purposes, the equivalent of 51 paddlers of the Medjidieh tyP 6
and he requests that this craft may be made up of 34 tugs of the Sumana Class
and 17 Medjidieh paddiers. The above requirements are in addition to the
craft already under orders from India, and England, and the existing river fleet
in Mesopotamia.
In our telegram quoted above, we requested you to arrange for the early
construction of 20 paddlers of the Medjidieh type. The requirements of I. E.
F. “ D/ 5 for this class of vessel, have thus already been arranged, with an excess
of 3 paddlers. We, however, consider that in his calculations the G. O. C., Force
“ D,” has overestimated the value of the craft under orders from this country.
It is accordingly strongly recommended that our order for 20 paddlers may be
allowed to stand, as the three vessels in excess of General Lake’s estimate will
not do more than bring up the value of the craft still under order in this country
to that placed on them by General Lake.
Record copy to Q.M.G.
Copy to M.S.C.
Will you now kindly place orders for the construction of 34 additional tugs
of the Sumana cjass. This will complete the demand of Force D in
full
Having in view the length of time involved in constructing and despatch-
nig craft from England, and of the impossibility of foreseeing the course that
operations in Mesopotamia are likely to take, and consequently the size of the
