. # Mesopotamia.
Tigris Line, 29th March.— On 28th March General Gorringe reported that the river had fallen 8 inches
in 24 hours. The^ country round Mandali, Badrah and Jessan is clear of enemy. 22 boats were
counted at Macasisf but no bridge. General Officer Commanding, Force “ Bf left Basrah for the
front on 29th March.

A demand for 600,000 sandbags was received from Eorce “ D ” with a request to arrange a further supply
of 150,000 bags per mensem.
The General Officer Commanding^ Force “ D,” urgently pressed the repatriation of Turkish Medical personnel
at present prisoners, and pointed out the dangers of failing to comply with the laws of war.
It was pointed out by the General Officer Commanding, Force “ D,” that much dissatisfaction was occasion
ed in the 13th Division through doubt as to whether pay was to be drawn at British or Indian rates.
The General Officer Commanding, Force “ D,” stated that he was not in agreement with the suggestion to
appoint a Naval Officer as Principal Naval Transport Officer and at the same time gave reasons.
A telegram was sent to the Secretary of State for India giving “terms of reference^ for the Medical
Commission.
The Secretary, War Office, London, was asked to supply certain Signal personnel to complete organisation
of Signals, Force “ D.”
The General Officer Commanding, Force “ D,” proposed to give Bin Saud two spare 10-pr. guns from men-
of-war at Basrah in order to fulfil promise of guns previously given.

This is accompanied by appendices containing copies and extracts of these papers, which include: telegrams, letters, tables, and memoranda containing instructions and reports.

The volume mostly relates to:

  • Reinforcements and supplies for Force D, including: weapons; ammunition; river craft; land vehicles; airplanes; animals; clothing; hospitals; chemicals; and tents
  • Staff movements, salaries, promotions and status (e.g. sick, wounded, discharged, dead)
  • Prisoners of war
  • Situation in Turkey, in particular the anti-German feeling and Russian advances
  • Updates from the Tigris line, especially around Kut [Al-Kut] and Hannah [Umm al Hannah] and with particular attention paid to the impact of flooding

  • Operations by the Russians in the Caucasus region
  • Details of Turkish [Ottoman] forces, including: proposals for negotiations; distributions (ff 65-66); changes in command; and movements of troops

The vast majority of material in the volume dates from March 1916, with the exception of quoted excerpts from a newspaper, dated 17 January 1916.
