V. ECONOMIC.
The economic relations of the Mosul Yilajret
are entirely with Baghdad and with Arab Syria, especially
with tne ^rab city of Aleppo. Indeed the closer connection,
resulting j-rom events since the Armistice, which is gradually
growing up between Iraq, Syria and I&lestine has increased
the importance of the cross desert trade between Syria and
Mosul.
Juleimaniyah exports all piece goods to Baghdad
whence all its requirements in foreign goods are obtained
in exchange.
inriOiM prospers on the carrying—trade between
Baghdad on the one hand and Mosul and Suleimaniyah on the
other, and depends on the maintenance of the connection
between these three.
■Liosul T s trade is almost entirely down river with
Baghdad and across the desert with Syria.
fne Yilayet as a whole imports piece goods, tea,
sugar and coffee. None of these are produced in Turkey
nor can they be obtained through Turkish territory except
with great difficulty and by diverting trade from routes
which it has followed for years.
The Yilayet exports principally grain, wool, hides,
tobacco and to a less extent timber, gum-tragancanth and
gall-nuts.
All the tobacco grown, except a relatively small
amount needed for local consumption, goes to Baghdad and is
consumed in the Baghdad and Basra Yilayets. The surplus
grain of the Yilayet goes to feed the people of Baghdad and
the timber to build houses in Baghdad. The wool, hides, gum
and gall-nuts are exported entirely to foreign countries.
