numbers of people, especially the Kui'ds and the Christians,
evaded the census. Turkish pre-war statistics were therefore
always treated with the grea test *g0tfcaut ion by impartial
neutral authorities, for instance Cu^fet.
What the Turks regard as the strength of their
case is the so-called affinity of the Kurds and Turks,
or Turkomans, who admittedly together form the majority
of tie Mosul vilayet. As regards the Kurds, the Turkish
Delegation referring to an article on Kurdistan in the
Encyclopaedia Britannica claim that Turks and KUrds are both
a Turanian race, an^,while speaking a different tongue,
they form a single block from the point of view of race,
faith and customs.
Our reply to this is that while the precise
origin of the Kurds is a matter of controversy, best
informed opinion regards them as an Iranian race which
their language goes to prove, and that theijp
are unlike the Turks ; differing in particu
lar in physical appearance and such customs as their
attitude towards women. In the Sulaimanyeh division the
Kurds have begun to write in Kurdish and make use of
Kurdish in the schools and in official correspondence.
They would certainly reject with scorn any claim of racial
or national affinity with the Turks apart from the
religious tie and the political connection of the past,
which, of course, still carries some weight among the
leaders who were paid or employed by the Turks before the
war.
