by us as the northern frontier of Iraq and as the
natural frontier for the Iraq State of the future, ,/e
also emphasised our obligations to the Assyrian popula
tion scattered in all the villages between Mosul and
the frontier which we have drawn. The world would never
forgive us if they were thrown back into Turkey. Their
sufferings have been so terrible that they could not be
expected to regard as adequate the minority safeguards
of the new treaty with Turkey, and they would certainly
fall back down into the plain where they could not
in the long run live.
My general view remains, however, that what
the Turks are really seeking is not the surrender of
Mosul town itself, but seme rectification of the Sevres
frontier analogous to that which they obtained i-ran
prance by the Angora Agreement (they quoted this cwice
as a precedent in our conversation). This rectification
which they want is mainly aimed at getting back as many
of the Kurds as possible into their territory.
It is quite true that if is very difficult to
offer such a rectification without (1) giving back
the villages where the Assyrians now are, and (2) with
out endangering the communications between Bagdad and
Mosul. On the other hand it might be possible to
keep enough of the mountainous territory immediately
north of Mosul as a home for the larger part of
the Assyrian population which is now there,and find
a place for the rest perhaps across the borders of
Iraq in Persia where they would be close enough for us
