My Lord, ' Tehran, August 7, 1923.
I HAVE the honour to transmit to your Lordship herewith copy of Intelligence
Summary No. 30, for the week ending the 28th July, compiled by the military attache
to this Legation.

Intelligence Summary No. 30, for week ending Jidy 28, 1923.
Gilan.
COLONEL MOHAMED HUSSEIN KHAN, the Officer Commanding Northern
Brigade (Caspian Littoral), on returning to Reslit on the 14th July from Tehran,
summoned all his officers and said to them :
“All Government departments and Ministries have got foreign advisers,'
“ except, thank Heaven, the Ministry of War, which is a Ministry standing on its :
“ own lees We officers and men must be united so as to consolidate our army. ;
{£ Every unit commander m his own command must see to it that he takes gicat
“ care of his men, eliminates all faults, errors and slackness. He must endeavour
“ to do this without continual reference to his*superiors. He must be independent
“ in his work.”
2. A reliable source reports that the late Russian consul at Resht, M, Apresof,
gave letters of recommendation before his departure to the following persons, as being
faithful supporters of the Russian Soviet and its policy : Sheikh Mohamed Hussein,
Sheikh Mohamed Taghi, Mahmoud Agha, Hr. Abul Kasim Khan. Ihe letters were
addressed to the new consul, M. Hakimof. . ^. n , r i
3. The order of battle of the Persian troops m Gdan on the doth July was as
follows :—
(a.) Resht —
Infantry; 493 of 3rd, 5th and 6th battalions of the Kismat-i-Gilan (Gilan
detachment).
Cavalry: 60.
Artillery : 30, with 2 field guns and 1 mounted gun.
Machine gunners : 64, with 8 machine guns and 15 pack mules.
Transport : 33, with 10 wagons, 25 diaught horses and 1 Ford touring car.
Headquarters’ staff, Northern Brigade : 25.
Band : 32.
Total all arms in Resht: 737.
Rifles in reserve in Resht: 3,300.

Njp r ph e Northern Brigade area includes the provinces of Gilan,
Masanderan and Astarabad, with headquarters at Resht. The O.C. brigade
is frequently called “ O.C. Caspian Littoral.”
The villages of PR-i-Bazaar, Bazar-i-Doshanbeh Shah Aghaji, Rudbar, Manjil,
Kochi Isfahan, Lahijan, Langarud, Ranehkuh, Siahkal, Held email, Kushk
Beiar and Khuman each have a post of 1 n.c.o. and 4 men.
