8 Tabriz.—A. special messenger sent to Kotur confirms the fact that the Turkish
detachment under Euz Demir, which entered Persian territory from Rowanduz had all
its arms confiscated by the Persian military authorities. He spates that , l
detachment, 460 strong, after disarmament, was sent across the lurkish frontiei via
Salmas and Kotur, escorted by 200 Persian troops under the command of a Persian
officer named Kalb Ali Khan Sarhang. > , ,
9. Simko is reported to be in correspondence with Sheikh Mahmoud and to have a
representative of the latter with him. ^
10. The news that the Grown Prince is to return shortly to labnz as Governor-
General is not entirelv approved of by the people, who fear that the removal of the
Military Governor of Tabriz will bring to an end the present state of peace and secunky
that reigns in the province. The War Minister is strongly^ opposed to the latter s
removal, for which the Crown Prince is pressing. The matter is still under dispute.

11. Major Mahmoud Khan, formerly chief of police at Kazvin, has been appointed
chief of police at Resht, in the place of the Swedish police officer, Major Sjoberg, who is
under orders for transfer to Tabriz.

12. The Irak ulama arrived at Kum on the 17th August, having travelled to Kum
by carriage via Sultanabad. They were given a demonstration of welcome on arrival.
13. Virulent anti-British speeches continue to be made in the Tehran mosques,
those of Sheikh Ayatullah Khalissi being published in full in the local newspapers.
The mullahs are inciting the people to make active demonstrations against the British
in order to force the Persian Government to take more energetic measures, and
advocate—
(a.) A complete boycott of British goods ; and
(6.) The expulsion of foreign missionaries from Persian territory.
The Cabinet and His Majesty the Shah are extremely nervous as to the possibility
of disturbances in the city during the Moharrem.
14. Reza Khan, the War Minister, has remained in his country house for the past
week and has done no official business on the grounds of ill-health. It is not yet clear
whether he is really ill or whether his temporary isolation is due to a recent quarrel
with His Majesty the Shah.
