Extract from a private letter from Lord Kardinge to
Mr. Chamberlain, dated 31st December 1915.

I am very glad you wrote and told me of the rumours
you have heard of unsatisfactory arrangements in connection
with the health and comfort of our troops in Mesopotamia,
for I am now, with your letter and the evidence that it
\
contains, able to put pressure upon the Commander-in-Chief
and also upon Sir J. Nixon who keeps on reporting that
everything is well. It is quite clear to me that all is
not well and I have urged the Commander-in-Chief to send
somebody to Mesopotamia to perform more or less the same
duties as those which you have explained to me had been
carried out by Colonel Lee in Flanders.
As for comforts for the men, I know enormous
quantities of every kind are sent to Mesopotamia from
India and that this has been the case from the very
beginning. But|what I hear is that these comforts do not
reach the men probably owing to the great difficulties of
river transport. Still I will have another go at everybody
all round after today when I get' back to Delhi.
I can only assure you that the comforts went from
this country are done on the most lavish scale, as I have
taken trouble to ascertain; and it will be of no use
despatching all these comforts if they never reach their
destination. I will let you know further about this
matter.

The successor to the Court of Directors. , collected for the Mesopotamian Commission which was convened to examine the causes of the besieging and surrender of the Indian Expeditionary Force in Kut-el-Amara [Al Kūt].
The papers cover a range of topics and include the following: General Townshend's assessment of the situation after the Battle of Kut-el-Amara; a précis of correspondence relating to the origins and development of the Mesopotamia expedition; and a collection (ff 396-399) of private telegrams between the Secretary of State for India and the Viceroy, prior to the outbreak of war with Turkey.
The file also includes some tables showing the strength of General Townshend's force at Ctesiphon (folio 111) as well as the Indian Expeditionary Force 'D' (In Mesopotamia) Troops of the 6th Poona Division (folio 114).
Correspondents include: General Sir John Nixon; Major-General Charles Vere Ferrers Townshend; the Viceroy of India; officials of the Admiralty; officials of the War Office.
