iLth December, and LG. 740 M 1-ith December. In view of facts that there are now
tour Divisions, 85th, oSth, 45th, 51st, in front of Townshend. That 5 th Composite
^ Division is now arriving Baghdad. i hat 50th Division is reported following it and
due Baghdad second week in January. That 17th Division may be following. And
that 86 th Division is reported concentrating on Euphrates line, making total of eight
Divisions as possible concentration against me within next two or three months, I
must ask for another two Divisions to be sent to me as soon as possible, otherwise X
may have to fight again without any resrrve.

^ ar Committee met to-day. Orders given to hasten despatch of remainino-
Division from France. Transport difficulties are enormous and make it quite
impossible to-send now two additional Divisions as asked bv Ximn. I doubt if they
can be spared later, but this will be further considered. ~ ^

8200. In continuation of my telegram 3204. I now learn from Admiralty that
the greater part of the two promised Divisions will reach Basra by 81st D comber
borne details and horse ships will be a few days later. The delay is entirely due to
french arrangements for Convoy.
There are great difficulties in immediately finding either the two additional
j ivisions oi the transport for carrying them in view of pressing necessities elsewhere
but the matter will be considered.

129/271/1. Jig us line. Latest reports from General Townshend, dated I 1 th
December give estimate of enemy’s strength and dispositions as follows
8,500 in front of him on left bank of Tigris of whom 3,000 in trenches, remainder
camped in rear. 1,500 on right bank in scattered detachments. Enemy cwalrv of
some 2,000 on left bank between Kut and Sinn. Arabs report that Turk- ioM k D)00
n their attack on evening of 12 th December and that Nureddin killed fatter
requires confirmation but General Townshend estimates Turks lost fully 1 000 on f
.' 2 th. Enemy’s guns remained silent throughout 14 th. H.M.S. Dracronflf ” 4 ^ A
gunboat! proceeded up Tigris on 14th December. ° ^

This file contains working drafts of confidential prints, correspondence and telegrams from the room of Sir Edmund Barrow, Military Secretary in the India Office The department of the British Government to which the Government of India reported between 1858 and 1947. The successor to the Court of Directors. , collected for the Mesopotamian Commission which was convened to examine the causes of the besieging and surrender of the Indian Expeditionary Force in Kut-el-Amara [Al Kūt].

The papers cover a range of topics and include the following: General Townshend's assessment of the situation after the Battle of Kut-el-Amara; a précis of correspondence relating to the origins and development of the Mesopotamia expedition; and a collection (ff 396-399) of private telegrams between the Secretary of State for India and the Viceroy, prior to the outbreak of war with Turkey.

The file also includes some tables showing the strength of General Townshend's force at Ctesiphon (folio 111) as well as the Indian Expeditionary Force 'D' (In Mesopotamia) Troops of the 6th Poona Division (folio 114).

Correspondents include: General Sir John Nixon; Major-General Charles Vere Ferrers Townshend; the Viceroy of India; officials of the Admiralty; officials of the War Office.
