From Secretary of State to Sir P. Lake, 22>rd January 191G,

Your telegrams of the 22nd. I deeply regret to learn of heavy losses
suffered by Aylmer’s forces, 1 am confident that General Aylmer and his
gallant troops will respond to your call for supreme effort which crisis
demands, and that you will give Aylmer every assistance in your power.
Please keep me fully informed of all developments.

Private. Aylmer’s reverse is serious and unexpected, but not
irremediable.
May I urge great caution in any statement made to Parliament or the
Press, since it would probably be exaggerated, and create unfavourable
reaction here. Emphasis might be laid on the torrential rains and floods as
having proved a serious impediment to Alyfner’s advance and capture of a
strongly fortified position. I wotilcl also deprecate announcement of our
total casualties when known unless those of the Turks are equally heavy or
heavier. The Turks do not announce their losses.
