129 200/1. 5th. Tigris line. General Townshend reports, 5th December, no
movement on enemy’s part. All sick, wounded, and prisoners have been evacuated
from Kut. Cavalry Brigade is being sent back to Ali-al-Charbi to join hands with
General Younghusband’s Brigade, three battalions ol which 51st, o3rd Sikhs and
50th Rifles together with General Younghusband and Brigade headquarters, are now
cn route to Ali-al-Gharbi. Arrangements for moving up reinforcements are in hand.
General headquarters reach Basra, 0th December.

dated- Sth December 1915.
129/2()5 1 . Tigris line. Townshend reports enemy force estimated at one division
entrenched to south-east of Kut on Tigris right bank with some eight guns. Another
force estimatect at 1,500 with guns are north-west of bridge on Tigris left bank.
Another force, bulk of two divisions, is installed on left bank 5 or G miles up-stream
of Kut. Our Cavalry Brigade reached Ali-al-Gharbi afternoon of 8 th December to
join hands with 28th Brigade, two battalions of which due Ali-al-Gharbi, 9th December,
and third battalion, 10th December. Fourth battalion of this Brigade and 1st Battalion
1 st Sussex Battery, left Basra, 8 th December. Major-General Aylmer leaves for
Amarah, 9th December. Other reinforcements being pushed forward as fast as
possible.

The successor to the Court of Directors. , collected for the Mesopotamian Commission which was convened to examine the causes of the besieging and surrender of the Indian Expeditionary Force in Kut-el-Amara [Al Kūt].
The papers cover a range of topics and include the following: General Townshend's assessment of the situation after the Battle of Kut-el-Amara; a précis of correspondence relating to the origins and development of the Mesopotamia expedition; and a collection (ff 396-399) of private telegrams between the Secretary of State for India and the Viceroy, prior to the outbreak of war with Turkey.
The file also includes some tables showing the strength of General Townshend's force at Ctesiphon (folio 111) as well as the Indian Expeditionary Force 'D' (In Mesopotamia) Troops of the 6th Poona Division (folio 114).
