Kurna 50 miles up stream at the junction of the Tigris
and Euphrates. This place is perfectly secure as to
position, commands the Shatt-el-Arab with its rich cul
tivation, safeguards Persian Arabia and controls the
telegraph line and the passage of the Euphrates. Te should
then await the development of the political and military
situation generally, ItoimIfldraiaiirirnBfflnniDDmmxaiDiaBttiqiBamrtaaigim
and in Sir Edmund Barrow’s opinion there was no object
in doing more at present.
The Military Secretary’s views were accepted by the
Secretary of State and the Government of India inferaed
accordingly.
Meantime Kurna had been reconnoitred, the enemy’s pos
ition containing two guns and some four or five hundred
men shelled and his gunboat ’’Marmariss” forced to re
tire up the Tigris.
Rifles and ammunition were brought in to Basra by the
local Arabs and the disembarkation of troops continued
and Mt Battery Brigade
up to the 2nd Peer, the 17th Brigade being landed at^)
Magil 4 miles above Basra.
The 17th Brigade,together with those troops whetih had
arrived with Sir A.Barrett on the 13th Hovr,completed /
practically^the reinforcements to the original advanced
force under Brig General Pelamain. They had left Bombay
and Karachi on the 20th and 21st Hovr under the command
C.B,
of Brig General T.H.Pobbie^I.A, with orders to join the
6th Pivision at the tad head of the Gulf.
It will be convenient to recapitulate here the composi

The successor to the Court of Directors. , collected for the Mesopotamian Commission which was convened to examine the causes of the besieging and surrender of the Indian Expeditionary Force in Kut-el-Amara [Al Kūt].

The papers cover a range of topics and include the following: General Townshend's assessment of the situation after the Battle of Kut-el-Amara; a précis of correspondence relating to the origins and development of the Mesopotamia expedition; and a collection (ff 396-399) of private telegrams between the Secretary of State for India and the Viceroy, prior to the outbreak of war with Turkey.

The file also includes some tables showing the strength of General Townshend's force at Ctesiphon (folio 111) as well as the Indian Expeditionary Force 'D' (In Mesopotamia) Troops of the 6th Poona Division (folio 114).

Correspondents include: General Sir John Nixon; Major-General Charles Vere Ferrers Townshend; the Viceroy of India; officials of the Admiralty; officials of the War Office.
