a reply to German-Turkish military preparations which
were obviously^ directed against the British.
The Force had reached Bahrein on the 23rd Octr and the
Sheikhs and Notables at once expressed their approval
of the proposed expedition and their intention of tele
graphing their deprecation of the provocative actions
of Turkey to the Shekh-ul-Iclam at Constantinople.
,Senegal Delamain reported that on his arrival he found
a young German named Marlig residing at Bahrein who
was in constant communication with the German authori
ties at Basra, Bushire and Teheran and who was not only
able to transmit information about the strength and
composition of the Force hut obtained Var news of HSfiimn
more recent date thah the General himself. ^7ith the
approval of the Government of India the young man was
made a prisoner of war on board ship.
Meantime India had been asked to get ready another Bri
gade mtfmrfirmrmfeAhmiMiTmmmiQin and had replied that the
whole of the fiihia remainder of the 6th Division was
being held ready to leave at short notice but must
await Convoy. The Indian authorities also considered
that the troops under General Delamain would be able to
take and hold Fao but could not push on to Basra with-
out support, partly on account of lack of camel trans-
port and partly because the mountain guns with it might
have to meet heavier hostile artillery.
In the Secretary of State T s reply directing the Force to
to proceed it was ordered that Fao should be at once
attacked and that the river should then be cleared as
far as Shumsuniya f above Dabba Island and about 4 miles
above Muhammerah) where it would await reinforcements
from India. Steps were to be taken to inform the Arab
Chiefs in the Gulf and on the Aden side of our inten
tions.
